Planning Your Deck

Before finalizing construction plans, consider what sort of deck would best suit you and your home. Do you want it at ground level, elevated or split-level? What will you use it for? Do you want shade or sunlight? When you have answered these questions, you can start planning a deck with pressure treated wood that will give you pleasure for years to come.

After you have chosen a deck design and location, check with local officials concerning special building codes. A construction permit may be necessary, but do not apply for one until all planning has been finalized. Be certain that pressure treated wood is used in all the plans in this book and that these plans meet your local building codes before ordering treated lumber and prior to construction.

You don't have to be a master carpenter to design and build a wood deck. Pressure treated wood and a few basic tools are all you need.
