Building
A Gate
Strong, secure, plumb gate-posts are the secret of
lasting, workable gates. Your gate width should leave 1/2"
clearance for the latch and hinge. Build your frame using a steel square
for alignment. Brace it with a 2x4 positioned diagonally
between the top, latch-side corner and the bottom hinge-side corner. For
an opening of more than 5', it is better to use two gates.
Hang your gate at least 1" above the highest
point of ground within the arc of the opening gate. Fasten hinge straps
to the ends of the stringers with lag screws, and set the gate on wood
scraps to align it with your fence. Mark hinge positions on the fence
post, attach hinges and hang the gate.
For lasting results, use sturdy latches and hinges
that are galvanized or cadmium coated.
