Gazebo Building Tips

Whatever you build with pressure treated wood will last a long time.  So, it makes sense to build it well.

Familiarize yourself with the construction steps and look carefully at the drawings and photos of the project you are going to build.  Building is easier when you understand how your project should fit together.

Measure, square, level and plumb.  Where applicable, use of a tape measure, the 3-4-5 rule, a reference line with string level and a carpenter's level are crucial for the strength and professional appearance of your project.  Be careful and accurate when measuring, cutting, squaring, leveling and checking for plumb.  For gravel or crushed rock needs, use 3/4" to 1-1/2" size.

Use galvanized or stainless steel nails, screws or bolts when working with pressure treated wood.  These fasteners are corrosion-resistant and will prevent rust stains on your projects.

It's a good idea to drill pilot holes for your fasteners, especially when nailing near the edge or end of a board.

Brush a wood preservative on all saw cuts and into drill holes during construction of wood projects.  Also recommended for areas where moisture can collect.

To maintain the appearance of your gazebo, use a clear water repellent or stain with water repellant.  Follow manufacturer's directions and apply to a clean, dry surface.
