Building Tips

All timbers should be pre-drilled to avoid splitting; holes and cuts should be double-coated with Timber Specialties GreatWoodTM end-cut preservative prior to placement.

Prepare a footing of 6" of 3/4" gravel or crushed rock.  Bury the bottom timbers of the retaining wall a minimum of 2/3 their height.  Make certain they are level.

Secure the bottom timbers to the ground with 1/2" pipe or 3/4" reinforcing rods, 3' or longer.

Secure each course with bars or spikes.  On higher horizontal walls us the deadman tieback system.

Place a vinyl or poly sheet at the back of the wall to deflect moisture into the gravel drain.  Backfill first with 12" to 24" of gravel, and place filter fabric between the top of the gravel stone drain and the topsoil layer.
