Maintaining Your Outdoor Project
When you build your outdoor project with quality pressure
treated wood, the preservative in the wood will
protect it against rot, decay and termite attack for a lifetime. However,
only a regular maintenance program can minimize the harmful effects of
weathering caused by rain, sunlight and temperature change. A good
maintenance program begins during construction and continues on through the life
of the project.
Building
When building outdoors, it is important that fasteners resist
corrosion. Use only galvanized, stainless steel or specially coated nails,
screws and bolts. Where wetting or moisture accumulation can occur, do not
use aluminum products in direct contact with pressure treated wood as
corrosion can occur.
Brush on two generous coats of Timber Specialties EndCoatTM
Preservative
to all cuts and holes in pressure treated wood as you build.
Finishing
Over time, pressure treated wood typically fades from the
familiar green to a silver grey colour with exposure to the ultraviolet rays of
the sun. It can also be finished using good quality oil or acrylic
coatings, for beautiful and durable colour.
For best results, make sure the wood surface is clean and
completely dry. (Many experienced builders suggest that you allow your
project to season for several weeks before applying a sealer or stain.)
Follow the coating manufacturer's recommendations, and test on a small sample
area before use to ensure the adherence and final appearance is as desired.
